worn out

whenever i told you i thought i might be ready to have kids (but not because i am actually going to, just because i thought i could)...i think i was smoking the good stuff that day BECAUSE as cute as they are, they are tiresome! i have been on my feet all day long and its only 1:15pm. These last few days I have had the lovely opportunity to bond more with my kids which hasn't happened a whole lot yet, but they are one exhausting bunch.

Yesterday Clemence showed me just how much she has been learning which makes all these headaches and frustrations worth it. She has been understanding more and more of my English and I have noticed because she will do what I say without me having to use French, which I still do a lot of, for my sake more than hers, but its been incredible. Yesterday afternoon we were with the neighbor girl playing in the snow and I was telling the kids something and it was with my franglish. The neighbor girl did not understand but Clemence did so she "translated" to her friend what I had said. It wasn't anything big or important, but I just thought that was so cool that she now understands me and whether I am speaking english or french she knows what I am saying. I know, I know, its easy to understand once in context, but we're talking about a four year old here... Anyways, it is making my job a lot more enjoyable now that I see there are fruits of my labor because at the beginning I was questioning whether or not I would be able to make much of a difference since I am not alone with the children that much, and now I see that I am. The little boy is having a harder time but in my opinon its because he doesn't really want to learn. He actually has English he learns at school but I think that he doesn't want to sound silly or stupid and so for him, English is what French is for me... but I don't have a way of explaining to him that he doesn't sound stupid or to encourage him except to continue to speak english with him.

Well, yesterday since I was home all.day.long with the kids, no breaks, no naps, no alone time... I was so thankful to go through my "home" drawer and re-find a bunch of things that have been sent to me thanks to my Mom and my aunt Debbie and cousin Sarah. The kids LOVED the crafts and making cookies, which I didn't think they would since their mom never does that kind of stuff with them. Maybe she just doesn't think to do those types of things with them? I have no idea, but it blows my mind because in the States, or maybe just the way I was raised, we had a bunch of Christmas traditions or games or crafts we did every year...making cookies, making ornaments for the tree, making christmas cards and other nic-nacs.... well, here are a few photos...

oh and we spent the afternoon playing in the foot of snow we received yesterday morning. it was fun!!!

not too long before I am on a plane to Vienna and then headed HOME for NYE!!! I am sooo getting homesick now that I know it is so close. I am so ever thankful for all of y'all and so blessed to have this time to come and hopefully see most of you... Hope everyone is having a blessed week before Christmas!!! This year has been completely different leading up to the holidays because 1. i haven't been Christmas gift shopping...no money and no space to carry anything= no gifts and 2. i am not in America with all the traditions and experiences to be had. It's been interesting. But i have enjoyed almost every second of it!!!

I was teaching them to "pose"

our attempt at a snowman (he has a knife for a nose)

Antoine lost his front tooth a week ago...
Oh, and last night I broke down and walked the thirty minutes to the "sports" store in my town and bought SNOW BOOTS. Where did I move to again? Finland??? It has been snowing so much and after the snow comes a lot of water and I also got word that Vienna is having some rather cold temps right now so all that added up to Kara needed some WARM, waterproof boots.... you know, they aren't as cute as I would like but I do have to say they could be uglier!!!

Well, the house cleaning lady just arrived so I think its time to let the kids out of the house and onward to the neighbors again!!!

Adios amigos...

Um....hello winter wonderland??? And it might be that i shiver all my unwanted pounds off my body and be as skiny as ever when I arrive in Houston.

Love you, bye

Today I took a nap

Today was THAT exciting!!!

I am so grateful for the opportunity to take naps after long or exhausting periods of time.

This weekend I had a fabulous time. Friday was a good friend's birthday celebration and I was so excited to present her with all her gifts and celebrate a birthday, my first one here. Everyone enjoyed (ok, they LOVED) my funfetti cake and were surprised to find out I didn't make it from scratch but that it came from a box. Oh, the ways of America, haha!

And then Saturday I spent shopping around Opera and visiting Galaries Lafayette. How I had never visited that store before is beyond me. It's the largest department store ever. Basically the size of a mall. And it houses nearly every brand possible. The only downside to being there during this time of year is that so is everyone else, and by everyone else I mean everyone in the world...or so it seemed. The decorations were just beautiful and the interior of the store was equally as incredible. Galaeries Lafayette is known for its window displays at Christmas time and this year they were pretty cool. Some of them were moving, some were just there, but they were all themed to old movies so each window was a different movie. It was pretty cool to see how they best displayed their products while staying in themes.

Its also been snowing A LOT around here. Where I live in the suburbs has been getting quite a bit more snow than in Paris and it stays a bit longer so it seems prettier and I really enjoy that about being out here. But my friend and I decided on Saturday that the snow was a bit much and the people were a bit much and so we retired to the good ol suburbs to relax inside. We decided on the way home we wanted McDonalds but once we arrived where we were to buy our food there was no McDonalds there. Instead we decided to make queso and buy salsa and that we did. Our grocery list for the evening was a bit odd... we bought a loaf of some amazing wheat type bread (a large loaf), salsa, some type of queso, hamburger meat to put in said queso, 2 bags of tortilla chips, and soda. Sounds like an American meal and we are both american. Well, thanks to all the snow falling my friend and I got stuck (we were at the equivalent of a wal-mart) and it took us 2 hours to drive half a mile home. So ate the whole way there. Interesting experience. I made the meal once we arrived home and afterwards we were so stuffed and we didn't understand how. I am never that stuffed after eating here anymore. It must be American food that makes you feel like crap after you're done. Yipee!!! And even though it wasn't the real thing, it was exactly what needed to be eaten at that point in time. Nothing better than some "homemade" queso and chips and a winter chick flick movie curled up in bed with a good friend!!!

Today after church I came home early because I was tried. Dont know why or how but it was so. I just woke up from an amazing nap and am going to have dinner with my family...what's on the menu for this evening? French pizza, my favorite!!! I think its now a Sunday usual. I have noticed the pattern. But I don't mind!

Only 4 more days and then I am in Vienna ....and then its also Christmas!!!

And then only 6 more days after that I am back in Paris to wake up the next morning to catch my flight to HOUSTON!!!!

We have had a lot of snow around here lately so please PRAY that the flights are safe and that my flight to houston is able to take off on time. The London airport has been regularly cancelling filghts and completely shut down for a few hours yesterday and Paris cancelled almost 40 percent of its flights yesterday so I am hoping for some SUN at the end of this week!!! The snow is great and I am learning what its like to live in a land of constant snow, although I have been told this isn't normal for Paris either, but I don't like the snow when it hinders your plans, haha!!!

Well, I hope y'all have enjoyed a bit warmed experience this weekend!!! Miss you all and wish you could be here to experience Paris in Christmas!!! It's been a wonderful experience and I can't wait to tell you all about it in person soon!!!

Oh, and as one of my hopeful "New Years Resolutions" I am going to do  a backwards....I am going to STOP mailing so many letters! I know it may not seem like you receive a lot of letters but I have been so blessed to have so many people mailiing me letter or packages which then in return receieve something from me. And birthdays and happy thoughts. Anyways, I have realized just how much money I have been spending on postage and I just don't have the budget for it and eat and travel or buy any necessities so I just need to cut down on my postage purchases! I wish I could write y'all all the time but I hope we can continue to keep in touch via Email, its FREE!!!! And skype, Its FREE also!!! and other forms of communication!!!

i love productive Friday's

So today has been a highly productive day when I forecasted a "sleep in bed until noon" kind of day!!! Thank you Jesus for shining the sun SUN SUN SUN down today!!! Overnight we received the gift of more snow. woo hoo!!! I do like the snow. It's very beautiful and so serene to have everything white. But with it comes ICE!!! And for those of you who don't know, i live on a hill. So getting around, even for me just walking, muchless the cars who like to drive particularly fast, can be a bit difficult. Add to that 2 young children and the low temperatures and you have a day of "kara doesn't want to go outside for fear of frostbite or breaking a hip"! Thankfully none of those have happened...yet.

Anyways, its getting closer and closer to christmas so I am forced to get out and finish all my chores and errands and things I need to do before its too late!!!

Today is my friend Grace's birthday. Happy 22!!! She doesn't read this (i don't think) so I can tell you what I am doing for her. First, you know you're getting old when you get practical gifts, such as toilet paper! haha. I owe her toilet paper because I am always at her house but I thought it would be fun to buy her a 12 pack. How ridiculous are we poor people??? And the funnest part...it was only 3 euros!!! So i splurged and bought some bows to go on top. And then I used my funfetti cake mix my awesome cousin Sarah and Aunt debbie sent me to make her a birthday cake. She is going to love it!!!

Anyways, its my last weekend before I leave and just before Christmas! I can't believe how fast time has flown around here! It's ridiculous!!! In such a short amount of time, 2 weeks... i will be in Texas. And I am praying for warm weather so I can get a break from this ridiculousness here. (not to mention the week before I will be in Vienna) Ps. how do you pack for the coldest place on earth and then for the warmest???

oh and I also made wassail this morning. I decided I should have paid more attention to my mom and Grandmother's when they cooked because I am not so good at reading a receipe and having it taste the same. grrr. And my friend Christina came over (yes, she braved the snow...but she has a car so its ok) and I cooked us lunch and we watched a movie I rented on iTunes.

What a beautiful day this has been!!!

I hope its been a beautiful day for you too!!!!

Happy week before Christmas!!!

Love, me

fancy seeing you

Bonjour from Paris!!! (where else would i be?)

I have exciting news!!!! My friend Grace, whom I have mentioned numerous times here, and I, are taking our relationship to a whole new level in 2011!!!!

She just booked us tickets to go visit her family in northern England in February!!!

I am so excited!!! She and I have talked about her coming to Texas so many times and while that is far, far off, I hope it does happen one day. And while her visit to Texas will be very different from my visit to England (one reason being I have already been to england, she has never been to the states), I am no less excited!!!

I am so blessed by the friendships I have formed here and that I am being invited into their families homes and welcomed!

Anyways, all is well in Paris this week. This is the last week of school, hallelujah!!! It's getting so close to Christmas!!! Which means I am so close to being in America again!!!

Ok, well, have a fabulous Wednesday!!!

preparing for Christmas

It is starting to feel a lot like Christmas around here. Everyone is preparing to leave and travel for the holidays, we sang Christmas songs at church on Sunday and there are Christmas lights everywhere. Oh, and the malls are jam packed. Remind me not to visit one until next year.

Today I received ANOTHER amazing parcel in the mail from MI MADRE (wrong language, i know) and I loved opening it and finding out what was inside. Ahhhhh, the perks of being away from home at Christmas have been totally awesome. I recieved more decorations for my room (and my future Parisian apartments, hopefully), some more food (yay), some Christmas CD's that was I was uber excited to get (even though they were mine from home haha) and she also included a stocking full of who know's what because I am not allowed to look/open until Christmas day. In Austria they don't have Santa Clause so my mom sent me a little something from SC. haha. Yes, I still believe in Santa and if you have a problem with that I don't care!!!

So a blessing, this morning I woke up completely ready for the week. Last week I feel as though I was short tempered and easily annoyed by everyone, especially my kids. I didn't like that and I was trying to figure out how to fix that. I already feel more patience and compassion towards their little kid behaviors and for that, I am grateful! I also woke up with a newfound confidence, as I do often, for speaking French. Some weeks are better than others, last week was not so great on the speaking French front, so I am very happy to have an attitude of desire towards my new language! It's not easy but I can see myself getting better and better and better and better! Thank the Lord!

Oh, and I have a friend who has sent me a few messages saying "dont miss your bus" because he knows I have a tendancy to miss my bus. Well, i missed it again yesterday. And what did that mean? It meant that I had to wait at the gare for 55 minutes for the next bus to arrive. I was on my way home and it would have taken longer to walk than to wait. Argh! That'll teach me, or will it??

And lastly, lately I have found my neighbors to be really helpful towards me. I come from Texas where the people are very friendly and very open and very willing to be there for you but this a different level. On Friday I was running late to catch my bus and it was the last bus of the evening so it was a do or die kind of situation (because obviously my whole life depended on me making this bus) and my neighbor saw me running for the bus and offered me a ride to save time. I would have missed it as I was talking to her the bus drove right past us. Such a kind lady she is, she sped up, passed the bus and then dropped me off before it had time to speed on past her....like 5 bus stops past the one I would normally get on at. And then this morning I was running late again and some elderly lady drove past me and saw me running down the hill to my bus and stopped and offered to drop me off at my bus stop! How crazy!!! I am very thankful for this small town more than I let off and I really like living here, despite my crazy love and want to live in Paris!

Well, I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. The snow has finally melted away and life is back to normal, if that even exists, and even though I had a wonderful day and my kids were so well behaved for me earlier, my little girl is (on cue) throwing a fit right now for her mother!!!! Gosh, I love four year olds and their lack of being able to control their behaviors!! :-D

remedy?

what's a good remedy for a day that ended in chaos leaving me with what i swear was a migraine and then followed by a day of NO SUN :-( and sleeping all day???

Hot showers are my remedy for everything these days. and boy how I love them.

I'm off to begin a weekend of who knows what...no plans for once... and I don't really know what to do with myself!!!
